Not surprisingly, 2012 sees the continuation of two of these offerings in reasonably unchanged form, with one very interesting exception, the 2012 528i. last year's bmw 528i was powered by a 240-horsepower version of bmw's 3. 0-liter inline-6. For 2012, however, the same entry-level 528i is now powered by a very different engine that points far into bmw's green future. The bmw 535i and 550i were all-new for 2011. the three variants, the bmw 528i, bmw 535i and bmw 550i, remain chic, crisp and distinguished for their aggressive styling and driving character. For the most demanding sporting driver, they are a bit on the big-and-heavy side, but their excellent vehicle dynamics and agility make them assertively proactive and manageable when faced with the necessity of an emergency avoidance maneuver, making them excellent family sedans. in furtherance of their safety-car orientation, the 5 series contain a comprehensive inventory of passive safety provisions, the multiple airbags and structural provisions that protect occupants in the event an impact occurs. The modular bmw interior, much of which finds its way into models from the top of the line to the bottom, is handsome and contemporary. Glowing tan and matte black contrast handsomely on the dashboard, these surfaces punctuated by elegant swatches of exotic wood. Instrumentation is comprehensive and flawless, in the german manner. All-wheel drive improves stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe outward appearance of the 2012 5 series is unmistakably bmw. It has no seemingly extraneous horizontal surfaces, as some recent bmws have had, adhering instead to the functional appeal that has long been bmw's signature. The display is trans-reflective: sunlight actually enhances its legibility. Cargo space behind the second row is generous for the class, an unusual achievement for a bmw sav. the exterior is tasteful. They get essentially the same fuel economy, but the turbocharged engine has more power. Otherwise the two models, x3 xdrive28i and x3 xdrive35i, are nearly identical, though the xdrive35i comes with slightly larger wheels. The xdrive28i and xdrive35i come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. an optional electronic damping control system is available to vary shock response according to conditions, with a driver-selectable three-position switch to focus its operation to the driver's intended activity. This so-called performance control switch also affects the level of steering assist, and the xdrive all-wheel drive system by selecting a 20/80 front-to-rear torque-split in steady state driving and also providing some so-called torque-vectoring influence in corners by braking an inside wheel. It's extremely smooth, with much of the sound of the car's undercarriage effectively attenuated. Luckily, this commendable compliance does not translate into a sloppy ride. Indeed, ride-motion control is exemplary, so progress is smooth and flat, just the way it should be. big 12. 9-inch disc rotors inside 19-inch wheels shod with 245/55r18 tires slow the xdrive35i's 4222-pound mass with real authority, backed up by abs. The base-level xdrive28i has the same brakes, but uses 17-inch wheels and 225/60r17 tires. bmw has adopted an electric steering assist system, and its engineers have not done a bad job of overcoming the feedback challenges attendant to this burgeoning new technique. In the x3, wheel weighting verges toward hefty, perhaps a tad too much so, accompanied by quite a bit of self-centering torque, but this should not be confused with real steering feel. nonetheless, clear and readable off-center response combines with very accurate path control to imbue the steering with a sense of virtual feedback feel that the mechanism itself does not impart in great measure. Better get used to it, because eps (electric power steering) will soon be ubiquitous on passenger cars.

Also new for 2011 were the activehybrid 750i and 750li models, combining power with fuel economy. And for those who want even more performance, bmw teamed up with tuner alpina to offer a new alpina b7. All-wheel drive is available for stability and traction in wintry conditions. after all that, changes are limited for 2012. All models now come with an ipod/usb adapter, sport steering wheel and rearview camera; while v8 models get upgraded audio systems and 19-inch wheels. Some option packages have changed. the 2012 bmw 7 series sedans comes in standard and long versions, the latter designated by an l in the numeric nomenclature. The bmw 740li, 750li and 760li have a wheelbase that's 5. 5 inches longer than that of the 740i and 750i. They're a little harder to parallel park, but they offer a ride that's even more luxurious and have considerably more rear-seat legroom. The long-wheelbase cars have their own roofline, and the silhouette is sleek. short or long, all bmw 7 series models have presence wherever they go. The 7 series body has no transparently gratuitous scoops or scallops, and the car's size and lines clearly say first class. the 7 series interior is classy and luxurious, like a richly appointed, roomy cocoon, protecting occupants from an ornery world. Just about every safety, comfort or convenience feature invented for the automobile is available on the 7 series. Some of the controls and features are overly complicated, however. yet dynamic verve is what really distinguishes the bmw 7 series: a combination of response, acceleration, smooth ride and sharp handling that few large sedans can match. Weight-efficient construction and innovative chassis technology contribute to the lively driving dynamics that many expect from a bmw. the bmw 750i and 750li feature a new-generation v8 engine, with direct fuel injection and twin turbocharging. This 4. 4-liter v8 makes 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, awesome numbers for an engine its size, while using less fuel than its predecessor to get occupants around town. It's matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The bmw 760li ups the ante with a 535-hp v12 and an 8-speed automatic. Total output is 455 horsepower and 515 pound-feet of torque. Zero to 60 mph arrives in just 4. 7 seconds and fuel economy is improved by 15 percent. Fuel economy is good but not great at an epa-rated 17 mpg city/24 highway. The 760li's side gills, located where the doors meet the front fenders, have a chrome finish and v12 badges. the 7 series looks best from the side or front three-quarter view. Both versions have pass-through openings for long items. driving impressiona new rear-wheel drive architecture, heavily composed of aluminum, makes for a chassis that bmw says is 50-percent stiffer than the previous 6 series. The normal setting delivers a balance of alert steering feel and shock-absorber damping ideal for everyday driving. The sport setting immediately elevates and stiffens the steering feel and hardens the ride quality for heightened road feel in more vigorous driving. It also increases the 650i throttle mapping to provide more a more directly responsive gas pedal. sport-plus goes a step further, partially reducing the amount of automatic stability control and allowing aggressive cornering of the sort expected on a racetrack. And in a nod to performance as theater, in both sport and sport-plus modes, a tiny spritz of fuel is shot into the exhaust, which produces a race car-like boom with each paddle shift. in comfort mode, the 650i forsakes sharp bmw driving dynamics for a soft, floaty ride, numb road feel and elastic steering. While this might be fine for long-term leisurely cruising on the interstate, it seems strangely out of place coming from a car company so keen on performance. the 8-speed automatic transmission exhibits fast, almost imperceptible shifting, and delivers peak fuel efficiency. This heavy car's fuel is in the gas guzzler territory and may incur $1000 or so in federal tax. the 6 series brakes have their work cut out for them hauling this two and a quarter-ton beast to a stop.
